NDP announce plan to ‘Hire Saskatchewan’

Saskatchewan NDP social media

The Saskatchewan NDP have announced a plan to ‘Hire Saskatchewan.’

In a post on social media, the party says, “Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are selling out Saskatchewan workers and companies. Today, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck committed that if given the privilege, her government would prioritize Saskatchewan workers and companies for public contracts and services.”

This comes after days of continued questioning of the provincial government about the tire recycling contract awarded to a California-based company.

Last June, NDP leader Carla Beck made a similar announcement where she said, “Saskatchewan tax dollars should stay in Saskatchewan communities, support Saskatchewan workers, and be invested back into the Saskatchewan economy,” she said. “I’m not here to fight for jobs in Alberta, Ontario or in the US. I will unapologetically stand up for Saskatchewan workers. Every single time.”

Saskatoon Chamber says government ‘sandbagged’ local company in tire recycling deal

The Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce released an open letter yesterday addressed to the Minister of Environment Christine Tell. The letter calls to improve scrap tire stewardship in Saskatchewan, and criticizes the recent deal to give a tire recycling contract in southern Saskatchewan to a California-based company. Chamber CEO Jason Aebig says that the government “sandbagged a Saskatchewan success story” in Saskatoon-based Shercom Industries.

Questions continue to surface around the short-sighted decisions taken by Tire Stewardship Saskatchewan (TSS) to regulate a once “free market” for tire processing in Saskatchewan and undermine the operation of Saskatoon-based processor, Shercom Industries. Decisions taken by TSS forced the closure of Shercom’s processing facilities by redirecting the supply of recyclable tires to make way for an American processor eager to set up operations in Moose Jaw.

Aebig suggests three recommendations to fix the problem: guarantee supply, fix the board, and release the report.

Shercom’s President Shane Olson said that the “The Premier and the Minister of Environment have been horribly misinformed.” He says Shercom was not allowed to bid on the RFP.

NDP leader Carla Beck and critic Meara Conway raised the issue in Question Period. Environment Minister Christine Tell said the government is not involved, and that those questions should be brought to Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan.

CRA auditing Saskatchewan following carbon tax remittal

Premier Scott Moe said Monday that the Canada Revenue Agency will audit the provincial finances after Saskatchewan did not pay carbon levies on home heating.

The province paid $172 million in carbon tax levies in 2022 and now CRA will look into how much the province owes.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was quoted saying “good luck with that, Premier Moe”, when it came to the CRA asking for the carbon tax.

The Carbon Tax Fairness for Families Act was passed unanimously in the Saskatchewan Legislature earlier this year.

Sask. Party attacks NDP following drug policy change in B.C.

Premier Scott Moe/Facebook

Premier Scott Moe is continuing to connect the Sask. NDP to its other namesake parties across the country, this time to the governing BC New Democrats.

In an attack-style post shared on social media, Moe shows a news article of BC rolling back drug decriminalization. On the other side, he shares a quote from last year where NDP Nutana MLA Erica Ritchie says that drug legalization has merits.

British Columbia’s NDP Premier David Eby announced his government’s plan to re-criminalize use of drugs in public spaces, following significant public backlash after an initial plan that involved decriminalization and safe supply of drugs in British Columbia.

In Saskatchewan, many Question Periods this sitting have ended with the NDP sharing overdose statistics and asking the government when they will implement an ‘evidence-based plan’ to help those struggling with addictions. Addictions and Mental Health Minister Tim McLeod has answered by saying the government is investing in a recovery-oriented system of care, and that the problem is drug use, and that this government does not want to “hand out crackpipes'.“
