NDP calls for Cockrill’s resignation over comments

Saskatchewan NDP leader Carla Beck is calling for the resignation of Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill over comments he made last week.

Last week, Taya Thomas met with the Minister of Education to discuss classroom complexity. Thomas’s oldest daughter Mayelle died last year after medical complications. Thomas said Mayelle was unable to attend high school in her wheelchair because of the lack of space in a specialized program. During the meeting Thomas asked what the Minister would do for classroom complexity to which he replied “What do they want me to do, give up my first born child?”

In Question Period the following day, as well as in the rotunda, Minister Cockrill said “In that meeting, Mr. Speaker, I used an expression that was a poor choice of words on my part. I did apologize to Ms. Thomas.” Ms Thomas said she never got an apology.

In question period, Premier Scott Moe said Minister Cockrill has the “full confidence” of the Premier and the caucus.

Sask. Party launches online attack against Beck in attempt to tie her to federal party

The Saskatchewan Party has posted a new attack-style social media video against NDP leader Carla Beck. The 30-second video says “The NDP is Trudeau’s choice for Saskatchewan.”

Premier Scott Moe tested the new lines in Question Period today as well, claiming that the Prime Minister wants a government in Saskatchewan he can ‘control.’

The video does not appear to be running yet as a paid advertisement, according to Meta’s Ads Library. (But we will keep an eye on that!)

The video footage comes from the recent Canadian Labour Congress Conference in Ottawa last week. In the Assembly chamber today, Beck said that she met with Saskatchewan workers in the Oil and Gas sector, health sector, and met with federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh to express her concern that the Atlantic home heating carve-out was unfair. Beck also said that New Democrats in Saskatchewan do not support the federal carbon tax.

We can expect ads of all types to become more frequent from both sides as an election looms.

Report Raises Concerns with Saskatchewan Rural Healthcare

The Saskatchewan Population Health and Evaluation Research Unit at the University of Regina released the report looking at the state of rural health care in the province. CUPE Local 5430 funded the project, however the research team said the research design and questions were independently created.

The research found that 533 disruptions were reported in the last four years.

Project lead Nuelle Novik said "Those folks in rural communities are finding themselves in those urban centres, which is increasing the demands on those particular systems."

Saskatchewan Health Minister Everett Hindley said recruitment is one of the main pillars to the government’s healthcare action plan, saying “As we continue to fill the vacancies that we have when it comes to nursing, we'll be phasing away from and phasing out the use of contract nurses as we build the health-care system here in Saskatchewan.”
