Saskatchewan Member of Parliament not running again

MP Gary Vidal (Prince Albert Daily Herald)

Saskatchewan Conservative MP Gary Vidal announced yesterday he is not seeking re-election. Vidal was elected as the Member of Parliament for Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River in 2019, and was subsequently re-elected in 2021. The riding that encompasses Northern Saskatchewan has seen representation from all three major political parties over the past 20 years.

Vidal says that due to redistribution, he no longer lives within the riding boundaries and that the constituency deserves to be represented by someone within the boundary. Vidal says that under the new boundaries, he resides in the riding of Battlefords-Lloydminster-Meadow Lake, represented by MP Rosemary Falk. The Conservative Party of Canada does not allow contested nominations for incumbent MPs if the riding does not change by 25%. Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River has a 23% change.

The riding is also unique in the fact that elected MPs often run provincially. Jeremy Harrison was the Conservative MP for this riding from 2004-2006. Georgina Jolibois was the NDP MP for this riding from 2015 to 2019 and ran provincially in the 2023 Athabasca by-election and former Sask. Party leadership candidate Rob Clarke was the Conservative MP from 2008-2015. In 2021, NDP MLA Buckley Belanger resigned to run federally for the Liberals.

The riding no longer includes the surrounding area of Prince Albert or the community of Meadow Lake. The Northern Saskatchewan riding is one of the only federal seats in play in Saskatchewan for the Liberals or NDP in the next federal election. The Conservative party will now nominate a new candidate for the riding.

Sask. Party advertises 2024 Budget on Billboards, Digital

The Saskatchewan Party has launched a new province-wide advertising campaign promoting the 2024 Budget with the theme of “Classrooms, Care, and Communities.” The billboards are paid for by the Saskatchewan Party government caucus.

Premier Scott Moe is featured next to the words “Classrooms, Care and Communities,” the three pillars of the government’s most recent budget.

There are also video ads promoted on Facebook, seen through the Meta Ad Library. Staying on theme, there are three separate videos, one for each of classrooms, care, and communities.

The videos feature the Premier, as well as Minister of Finance Donna Harpauer, touting recent investments in the 2024-25 Budget.

Sask. Party candidate nominated in Weyburn-Bengough

Mike Weger (Facebook)

There will be a new face of the Saskatchewan Party in the Weyburn-area for the first time since 2006.

Sask. Party members in Weyburn-Bengough have nominated Mike Weger as their candidate for this fall’s election. He was acclaimed as the party’s 48th candidate last night in Weyburn.

Weger practises law in the community and is actively involved as a hockey coach. Weger is also an advocate for cystic fibrosis.

Dustin Duncan has served as the MLA for Weyburn-Big Muddy since 2006 and has been a front-bench cabinet minister serving in Education, Health, Environment, Crown Investments, and more. Weyburn-Bengough is a safe Sask. Party seat, with the party taking more than 75% of the vote in the last two elections.

The next nomination will be a contested nomination in White City-Qu’Appelle to replace outgoing MLA Don McMorris on May 1.
